7th Floor Media Helps Launch the Canada Marine Discovery Centre

VANCOUVER July 4, 2004

7th Floor Media is proud to be a part of Parks Canada's new Canada Marine Discovery Centre, opening today on the shores of Lake Ontario in Hamilton. Combining unusual architecture, a beautiful setting and stimulating displays, the Centre is designed for young Canadians and their families to learn about Canada's natural and cultural inheritance and to understand the importance of our marine environments.

Working in close collaboration with designers and architects, 7th Floor Media designed and created twenty touchscreen activities, ten video loops and seven audio features for the new Centre, including:

  • playful interactive games that challenge young visitors to navigate the treacherous St. Lawrence and explore the history of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery
  • touchscreens embedded in tidal pools, canoes, picture frames and other surprising places for visitors to discover and explore
  • soundscapes that capture the sounds of the far corners of Canada
  • video footage from various levels of Pacific kelp fields embedded in a tunnel display evoking the experience of an underwater dive

"The Canada Marine Discovery Centre will share the stories of Canada's national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas, delivering Parks Canada's messages outside these boundaries,"said Minister Tony Valeri at the ribbon cutting ceremony today.

"Working with the designers and architects of these installations in a collaborative way really allowed us to use our design versatility and take full advantage of the technology," says Dennis Smith, Creative Director of 7th Floor Media. "We're looking forward to watching the first visitors experience the Centre."
